Numismatic Coins

Numismatic is kind of a tough word, so these are more commonly known as Investment-Grade cons. Investment-Grade coins are historical bullion pieces that now have added value due to their rarity or the demand by collectors. These coins are less liquid than bullion; however they offer the potential for greater returns for investors over bullion. These coins are graded and certified by either the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The grade of these coins are determined by a panel of Numismatists or coin specialists who consider the coin's condition and give it a grade.

If a coin is considered to be of investment quality, it is called Mint State and given a rating of MS. Mint State coins are given grades ranging from about 55 on up to 70 based on number of factors. Then, based on the grade, the date, production, and popularity the coin's value is set by the investment and collector community, as the laws of supply and demand take hold.

Many coins can be considered investments for a number of reasons, however, for the typical non-collector investor; these general guidelines should be used:

  1. United States coins only.
  2. Date Prior to 1933.
  3. The condition or "grade" is Mint State (MS) or Proof (PF) 63 or higher (64, 65, 66 or 67). Numismatic coins graded 68 to 70 are very difficult to price due to extreme rarity and usually should be avoided.

A Word About Owning Physical Metal

Owning physical metal is a long-term investment. Physical metal is not typically used in trading, or for quick turn-around profits. In general terms, owning physical metal is more of an investment while owning mining shares or trading futures would be considered more speculative.

One measure of an investment is liquidity: how easily can it be converted to cash? Physical gold ownership has protected investors during periods of economic depression, wars and political unrest, and physical gold can be used for barter or purchasing life sustaining items during crisis times. By taking delivery of bullion or numismatic coins, your investment can be sold for cash at most coin and precious metals dealers worldwide.
